Germany called on Merz to give Ukraine Taurus missiles
Omid Nuripur, vice-chairman of the Bundestag and former co-chairman of the Green Party, said that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz should authorize the supply of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. This was reported on December 28 by the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper.
Nuripur stressed that the head of government is obliged to follow the position he himself held before coming to power.
"It is good that Federal Chancellor Merz claims the leadership role of Germany. Now he must adhere to what he rightly demanded in the opposition and open the way for the supply of Taurus," said the vice chairman of the Bundestag.
According to him, the use of frozen Russian assets and financial assistance to Kiev remain important, but insufficient measures. He noted that without increased military support, pressure on Moscow would not be effective. The statement was made against the background of intensified negotiations on a possible peaceful settlement.
In Germany itself, however, there are still no clear political signals about an imminent decision on the Taurus. Despite statements about Berlin's leading role in supporting Ukraine, the issue of supplying long-range missiles remains the subject of internal discussions.
On December 14, Roderich Kiesewetter, a member of the Bundestag from the Christian Democratic Union, announced the need to transfer Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine and provide it with reliable security guarantees. He also called on Europe to take over air defense over Western Ukraine.
