- Latvia has again extended the ban on night flights along the borders with Russia and Belarus.
The Latvian aviation authorities have decided to extend the temporary ban on evening and night flights of all types of aircraft in the border areas with Russia and Belarus. This was reported on December 28 by TASS with reference to the control service of the Riga flight information area.
"The ban on flights in the evening and at night along the borders of Russia and Belarus has been extended again for a week — until January 4 next year," the agency's source said.
In accordance with the current rules, flights at altitudes up to 6 km are prohibited in the airspace along the borders with Russia and Belarus daily from 17:00 to 05:00 World time, which corresponds to the period from 20:00 to 08:00 Moscow time.
The dispatch service stressed that information about the extension of the ban has been communicated to all users of Latvian airspace in accordance with the established procedure. Previously, these measures, first introduced in September, were in effect until the end of the current day.
In addition, similar restrictions apply to flights along the Latvian borders with Estonia and Lithuania. Exceptions are possible only in certain cases — for flights that have received special permission from the country's military department.
Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginene said on November 13 that Latvia and Estonia are ready to close the border with Belarus as a sign of solidarity if Minsk continues its alleged "attacks."
Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics said that the country is considering the possibility of completely dismantling railway sections leading to Russia. He added that discussions on social media about the dismantling of railway tracks were "unnecessarily emotional and irrational."
Dmitry Kasatkin, Charge d'affaires of the Russian Federation in Riga, said on December 27 that the scale of Latvia's military preparations near the border with Russia is growing. According to him, Riga is actively building an "anti-mobile" infrastructure in the border area with Russia, installing anti-tank ditches and "dragon's teeth", as well as other technical facilities.
