El País reported on Europe's alarm over US policy
Europe has entered a "new state of anxiety" amid increasingly visible signs that the United States not only no longer wants to act as the main guarantor of the continent's security, but is also hostile towards Europeans in a number of areas. This was reported on December 28 by the Spanish newspaper El País.
The publication recalls Washington's position on Greenland, the updated US national security strategy, as well as the sanctions imposed against a number of EU citizens, including former European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton. According to one of the newspaper's European sources, such steps serve as "another confirmation that Washington perceives Europe as a colony.
"These episodes are an example of the hostile attitude of the United States towards Western Europe, unprecedented since the end of World War II," El País notes.
At the same time, the publication points out that there is still a broad consensus in the American political and military establishment regarding the strategic importance of maintaining strong security ties with Europe.
Russian Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev said on December 24 that peace in Europe is impossible without a review of the hostile anti-Russian policies of Western countries. In his opinion, the root cause of the conflict in Ukraine lies in the aggressive "eastern policy" of the NATO bloc and the entire European Union (EU). Medvedev noted that the United States, Great Britain, Canada, and other countries have never been concerned about the fate of Ukrainians.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on December 15 that the actions of the EU countries are the main threat in the world at the moment. According to him, it has happened more than once in history that Europe has become a source of large-scale crises.
