Chinese Embassy warns of risk of military conflict in Taiwan
Taiwan may turn into a "powder keg" due to the supply of American weapons. This was announced on December 28 by the Chinese Embassy in Washington.
"Separatist forces advocating Taiwan's 'independence' are trying to advance their separatist agenda and oppose reunification by building up military power, wasting taxpayers' money on purchasing weapons and even risking turning Taiwan into a 'powder keg,'" Embassy spokesman Liu Pengyu told RIA Novosti.
He stressed that US arms supplies to Taiwan "will not be able to prevent the inevitable failure of Taiwan's independence and will only accelerate the approach of the Taiwan Strait to the danger of military conflict." Liu Pengyu also noted that the actions of the American side "grossly violate the one-China principle, infringe on China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and undermine peace and stability in the region."
China has expressed serious protest to the United States and called for an end to arms sales to Taiwan.
Earlier, on December 26, it was reported that China imposed retaliatory sanctions against 20 American military-industrial companies for selling weapons to Taiwan. The restrictions were introduced in accordance with the law on countering foreign sanctions. At the same time, Beijing noted that the US actions violate the "one China" principle and undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the PRC.
