Happy Santa Claus: a severe cold snap will come to Russia with the New Year holidays
Muscovites will celebrate the New Year with a hard frost and light snow, meteorologists say. By this time, a stable snow cover will finally form in the central part of Russia. And in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, Sverdlovsk Region and Yakutia, abnormal frosts are expected on New Year's Eve and New Year's Eve. Doctors in such cold weather urge not to forget to dress warmer — to wear thermal underwear, apply a layer of protective cream on your face and wrap yourself with a scarf. And the volunteers remind us that there are homeless people on the streets, and urge us not to forget about them.
Russian Winter
Thanks to the cyclone that arrived on December 26, the long-awaited snow covered the European part of Russia. And this cover will already fall securely — for all New Year's holidays, Alexander Shuvalov, head of the Meteo forecasting center, promised Izvestia.
— From Thursday evening to Friday, heavy snowfall took place in Moscow and the central part of Russia — it was wet snow, which is good for making snowballs and snow women, — he said. — The height of the snow cover will reach 10-15 cm by the New Year.
According to the expert, in the central part of Russia, after a short-term warming, frosts will gain strength. It is expected that by New Year's Eve in the Moscow region, the temperature range will drop to –10-12 degrees.
"It's a perfect temperature for New Year's Eve,— Alexander Shuvalov summed up.
Tatiana Pozdnyakova, a leading specialist at the Meteonosti news agency, confirmed to Izvestia that frost will cover almost the entire European part of the country at the beginning of next week.
— A hard frost will come to Moscow on New Year's Eve. The temperature will drop below normal by two to three degrees. It will freeze to -15 degrees at night, and to -10 degrees in the afternoon. The cold weather has penetrated the North Caucasus, the Lower and Middle Volga," said Tatiana Pozdnyakova.
The expert called this weather a real Russian winter, adding that such a temperature is slightly below the climatic norm. However, this is not considered an anomaly.
Alexander Shuvalov added that in the east of the European part of the country — in Kazan and Nizhny Novgorod — it will be slightly cooler than in Central Russia. And in the west of the country — in Pskov, Veliky Novgorod and Velikiye Luki — it is slightly warmer than in the capital.
Extreme frosts have been entrenched in Yakutia for two weeks now. In the village of Oymyakon, the coldest inhabited place in the world, the temperature dropped to -56 degrees during this period. A 30-degree frost with very strong winds of up to 30 m/s was recorded in Tiksi.
Where will there be abnormal frosts
In the Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrugs, the temperature will be 7-18 degrees below normal before and after the New Year, Roman Vilfand, scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia, told Izvestia. According to him, frosts are expected to reach -40–43 degrees in the Yamalo–Nenets Autonomous District, and up to —33–40 degrees in the Khanty−Mansi Autonomous Okrug.
— In the Sverdlovsk region, on New Year's Eve and New Year's Eve, the temperature will be 5-8 degrees below normal, with a minimum value of 26-28 degrees, which is quite severe frosts, – said Roman Vilfand. — Let me remind you that the Sverdlovsk region is almost at the latitude of Moscow, just half a degree north.
Abnormal frosts will be in the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and in Buryatia — at least five degrees below normal, residents here will face 37-degree frost and below. In Yakutia, the New Year is expected to be 48-49 degrees, the meteorologist explained. In the Amur region, 41-43 degrees below zero are expected in the near future, and then the temperature will rise by 5-8 degrees.
— In the Crimea and Krasnodar Territory, as well as in the republics of the North Caucasus, the temperature will be close to normal: negative at night, small positive values during the day, — Roman Vilfand explained. — In the south of Western Siberia, in the most densely populated areas — Omsk, Tomsk, Novosibirsk regions — in the days remaining before the New Year, the temperature will rise by about 15 degrees, there will be a thaw.
How not to freeze in the cold
A greasy cream will help protect the body from frost if applied in a thick layer on the face before going outside, explained therapist Andrey Kondrakhin. It is worth tying a scarf, covering your nose and cheeks.
— Hands should wear gloves, preferably mittens. Your feet should also be warm, so we wear wool socks. Constant movement and clothes according to the weather will help keep you warm," Andrei Kondrakhin noted and advised women to wear trousers rather than skirts in the cold.
Alexandra Fileva, an expert at the Hemotest laboratory, did not recommend that adults stay outside for more than 15-20 minutes if the air temperature is below -25 degrees. With a child, you should not go outside for a long time if the temperature is below -15 degrees. At -10, you can walk for up to 40 minutes, taking into account the strength of the wind, which makes the cold feel stronger.
Each organism reacts differently to frosts. Therefore, the expert doctor advises to monitor not only the norms and figures on the thermometer, but also your feelings. Severe trembling, decreased sensitivity of fingers and face is an excuse to end the walk and go home. More alarming signs — pallor or bluishness of the skin, numbness of the fingers, nose, ears, severe fatigue and drowsiness, confusion of speech — indicate severe hypothermia. In this case, the person should be brought to a warm room as soon as possible, given a warm drink or broth, and helped to warm up as soon as possible. If signs of hypothermia persist, a doctor should be called.
According to Andrey Kondrakhin, when frostbite occurs, a person begins to feel numbness in the part of the body that is exposed to the cold. Then it turns red, turns pale, bubbles and even blackness may appear.
— If a person does not feel any part of the body, you need to keep warm: rub it red to keep warm, move, run. In any case, do not rub the numb parts of the body with snow, because it damages the skin," the doctor advised. — If possible, you need to go into a warm room. Do not touch the battery with your hands, it is better to put them in water at room temperature until there is a slight tingling sensation, and then warm up in the bathroom. You should not drink tea, coffee or alcohol, but only broth or warm drinks.
The expert noted that the perception of frost also depends on humidity.
— The wind is blowing, the humidity is high, and we cool down faster. The higher the humidity, the lower the temperature feels," the expert explained.
How to help the homeless in the cold
Volunteers are trying not only to feed, but also to keep the homeless warm during the cold season, Lana Zhurkina, director of the House of Friends center, told Izvestia.
— On New Year's Eve, we traditionally give people bags in which we put warm socks, gloves, hats, so that they are as warm as possible, — she said.
Government services and volunteer organizations are installing mobile heating points at Moscow railway stations, where homeless people most often come during frosts. There is also a minibus nearby where people can keep warm, and tents are being set up for overnight stays in different parts of the city.
According to Lana Zhurkina, there is a "Social patrol" in cities, a service that can be called if a person freezes and wants to be taken to a warm place for the night.
— If a person is lying on the street, it is clear that he is frozen, you need to call an ambulance, — said Lana Zhurkina.
Traditionally, volunteers distribute hot food for free: soup and tea. If a person approaches a passerby and asks for food, it's best to buy him hot cocoa with milk and a pie, the volunteer added.
