With the onset of winter, the risk of colds and flu increases, so it is important to think in advance about protecting yourself and your loved ones. Recent research shows that in addition to the usual measures — hand washing, ventilation and vaccination — there are lesser-known but proven ways to strengthen the immune system. This was reported in the journal Science Focus.

Maintaining optimal air humidity plays a key role in protecting against viruses. Studies show that influenza viruses persist longer in dry air, and low humidity weakens the body's defenses, making the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, and throat less effective. Experts recommend maintaining indoor humidity at 40-60% using humidifiers with automatic control.

Previously, it was believed that intense physical activity weakens the immune system, increasing the risk of diseases. However, research by John Campbell, a doctor from the University of Bath, shows the opposite: during exercise, immune cells are activated and directed to vulnerable tissues, increasing the body's defenses. Both aerobic exercises and strength training are effective, which stimulate the production of proteins that support the immune system.

As for vitamins, vitamin D has been proven to strengthen the immune system in winter, while vitamin C only slightly shortens the duration of illness. In addition, adults are recommended to take 10 micrograms of vitamin D daily from October to March. Research from the University of Surrey has shown that vitamin D3 is preferable to D2 because it activates genes that help protect against viruses and bacteria.

Dmitry Edelev, MD, said on December 18 that the incubation period of the Hong Kong flu does not exceed two days. He noted that for others, the sick person is contagious the day before the first signs of the disease appear and about 5-7 days after the onset of the disease. At the same time, if the disease proceeds without complications, the acute phase lasts about 4-5 days.
