Russian President Vladimir Putin may travel to Budapest via Turkey, the Mediterranean Sea and Serbia to meet with US President Donald Trump. This was announced on October 17 by retired Colonel Viktor Baranets.

"The most likely route may be through Turkey, the Mediterranean (neutral airspace), Serbia and further to Hungary. This route has already been called the "Balkan Corridor," according to his article for the newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda.

It is also noted that there is another option – through Turkey, Serbia and Bulgaria. However, Baranets noted that even in this case, safety in the sky cannot be guaranteed due to Bulgaria's position.

"The most economical and shortest route is Russia — Belarus — Poland — Slovakia —Hungary," the colonel concluded.

Earlier in the day, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced after talks with Putin on October 17 that preparations for a meeting between the United States and Russia in Hungary were underway at full capacity.

Szijjarto announced a telephone conversation with the Russian leader's aide Yuri Ushakov in preparation for the Russian-American summit. Szijjarto later said that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio would also hold a telephone conversation on Friday evening, October 17. They will probably arrange a meeting in Hungary.

On October 16, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Hungary and called the phone conversation with the Russian president productive. He later stated that he hoped to hold the summit within two weeks.
