The flight from Moscow to Kazan takes only an hour and a half — it is as comfortable as possible to radically change the environment, set up for a proper rest and at the same time not have time to get tired of the trip. The first thing you notice immediately after leaving the airport building is a completely different rhythm here. The bright, clean and spacious city is in no hurry. This is the best way to take long walks and have long conversations over a cup of fragrant tea.

The majestic Kremlin, the cozy Tatarskaya Sloboda, wide embankments, various theaters, museums and galleries, vernissages of local artists and performances by street musicians — everyone will find something to their liking. But in recent years, Kazan has confidently declared itself as a promising gastronomic destination, which is considered one of the most important tourist components of any city. Today, in general, you can come to the capital of Tatarstan only to have a delicious and varied meal.

A confident start

A few cups of invigorating tea with meadow herbs. And to them — hot bread with butter and a spoonful of floral honey. There is also argamak, soft young cheese, fluffy pancakes made of sour dough with stringy kaymak, fried eggs with baked peppers and tomatoes, baked eggplant, and cornel jam.

All this abundance, seductively called Tatar breakfast, is served at the cafe "Aulak" on Ulyanov-Lenin Street. It is prepared exclusively from local products, adhering to traditional recipes and even techniques. For such an occasion, the establishment has a wood-burning oven, where, in addition to pancakes with bread, excellent eleshes and echpochmaks are baked. After such a meal, any walk will only become more pleasant.

Outside of the "Tatar breakfast" in the establishment, it is worth paying attention to the excellent curd casserole from the court with salted caramel and kaymak, tender ham with veal and airy donuts with torn horsemeat. And exotic lovers will surely like the "golden" echpochmak, of course, sweet.

Lunch according to tradition

Having walked around the Kremlin to his heart's content, imbued with the romantic legend of the difficult fate of Princess Suyumbike and appreciating the incredibly bold artistic language of Nikolai Feshin, who is also called Kazan Serov, in the collection of the local State Museum of Fine Arts, it's time to stop by Chiram for lunch. This legendary Kazan restaurant of national cuisine recently moved from the embankment to the Kremlin walls. But the change of location, fortunately, did not affect the quality of the dishes in any way. Kystyby, chebureks, horse meat steak, and baked shoulder of lamb are excellent here. And the local echpochmak has every reason to claim the title of exemplary.

Note: you should definitely order cold cuts of meat at Chiram. In addition to several types of sausages and boiled horse meat, it includes savory horse fat.

You can also have dessert here. But it is better to move to the tea lounge "Ak Chynayak", which just the other day opened its doors exactly opposite the cathedral mosque. With her interior, she refers to the entourage of pre-revolutionary living rooms in the homes of wealthy Kazan Tatars, where guests were greeted with a samovar and a scattering of a wide variety of sweets like chak-chak, talkysh kaleve or baursak.

The evening of a satisfying day

Of course, there are many worthy establishments in Kazan beyond the national gastronomic traditions. For an evening meal, it is quite possible to choose just such a thing. For example, in the Lulua restaurant on Professor Nuzhin Street, guests are treated to Middle Eastern cuisine. Manaish tortillas with veal, herbs and pumpkin, beef tagine, kebabs, saj and Moroccan shawarma with tiger shrimp are very well prepared here. The portions are large and satisfying.

The Gina restaurant on Stolbova Street serves a decent vitello tonnato with Romesco, seafood pasta and Venetian liver. For oshizushi with tuna and lychee, roti with shrimp, signature rolls and gyoza with a variety of fillings, it's worth taking a look at the pan-Asian Zuka, located literally next door.

And for those who will have time to miss the stylish author's cuisine, it makes sense to go to Anna bistrot on Butlerova Street, a very St. Petersburg place in its spirit. Here you can taste fish carpaccio with fresh strawberries, gougeres with smoked salmon, onion soup with gruyere, green pasta with pistachios, stewed duck breast with apple and curry with shrimp. The elegant presentation of each dish deserves a special mention.
