The number of lawyers in the Russian Federation may grow to 100,000.
About 75,000 lawyers currently work in all regions of Russia, including Donbas and Novorossiya. This became known on July 22 at a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Justice Minister Konstantin Chuychenko. At the same time, their number may grow by a third — up to 100,000 — after the adoption of the law on the professionalization of judicial representation. How he will change his legal practice and how many lawyers are involved in the special operation can be found in the Izvestia article.
What was discussed at the meeting
The Minister presented to the President the results of the International Legal Forum that took place in St. Petersburg in May. In total, almost 6 thousand people took part in it: among them 17 heads of judicial systems from other countries, as well as six general prosecutors. In addition, 23 justice ministers arrived this year, compared to 20 last year. "By the way, the president of Interpol (Ahmed Nasser al-Raisi) even came. — Ed.), who took part in the plenary discussion as a speaker, so we will further develop this forum. I think it has become — and we must maintain, so to speak, its status — precisely the world's leading platform in the field of jurisprudence," the minister said.
Today in Russia, the corporation of lawyers includes 75 thousand people. According to Konstantin Chuychenko, regional law chambers have been established in all regions, including the Donetsk and Lugansk republics, Zaporizhia and Kherson regions. Moreover, lawyers are actively involved in providing free legal aid: 10 thousand specialists conducted 155 thousand gratuitous consultations in 2024.
The Ministry of Justice is working to professionalize judicial representation: a special bill proposes to introduce a general rule on the status of a lawyer for judicial representatives. The agency has submitted its initiative for public discussion, and the government has already supported it. "We have been discussing for quite a long time and have come to the conclusion, and all the bodies interested in this have supported, that this event should be held on the basis of the bar. Because our citizens have the right to qualified legal assistance, and this is a constitutional right," Konstantin Chuychenko said. According to his estimates, the professionalization of the legal profession will increase the number of such specialists to 100 thousand.
Konstantin Chuichenko told Vladimir Putin about the lawyers involved in the special operation: 276 people went to the war zone: 24 of them died, 36 were injured. "This is a very serious figure, and it speaks precisely about the very deep and correct civic position of the Russian legal profession," the minister stressed.
