In 2025, the eleventh anniversary of the reunification of Crimea with Russia will take place, an event of great importance for historical justice. The memorable date of March 18 instantly became a holiday for all Russians and especially residents of the peninsula. Read in the Izvestia article how events unfolded in 2014 and how the republic celebrates a return to its roots.

How Crimea reunited with Russia in 2014

Historically, the peninsula was part of Russia. The Crimean Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was formed in 1921 as part of the RSFSR, and in 1946 it became the Crimean Oblast. In 1954, the region was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Crimea became part of Ukraine on contractual terms.

However, residents of the region have always adhered to a pro-Russian position, and against the background of the political contradictions that engulfed Ukraine in 2013, the Crimean leadership embarked on a course of rapprochement with Russia.

The changes that took place in the life of Russia in 2014 are popularly called the Crimean Spring. Initially, on March 11, 2014, the Supreme Council of the Republic and the Sevastopol City Council adopted a declaration of regional independence, and then, following a referendum, Crimea and the city of Sevastopol became part of the Russian Federation. More than 96% of the residents of these territories voted for this decision.

It was on March 18 in Moscow that the treaty on the return of Crimea to Russia was signed, which entered into force on March 21 after ratification by the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation.

In 2015, the republic's State Council amended the law on holidays and commemorations on the peninsula, and March 18 became the Day of Crimea's reunification with Russia.
