There have been 508 road accidents in Russia over the last weekend of the year
Over the last weekend of the outgoing year, 508 road accidents occurred on Russian roads, in which 80 people were killed and 667 injured. Among the dead, 71 people were drivers and passengers. This was reported to Izvestia on December 29 by the State Traffic Inspectorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia.
20 accidents involving buses were recorded, in which one person was killed, and 26 more road users, including four children, needed medical help. 12 bus accidents were caused by traffic violations committed by drivers of other vehicles.
As a result of 114 accidents, 48 of which occurred at pedestrian crossings and 66 outside their area of operation, nine pedestrians were killed, and another 110 were injured in various degrees of severity. Among the injured were 22 underage pedestrians, 15 of whom were injured while crossing the roadway at designated locations.
Last weekend, 65 accidents involving minors were registered on the roads of Russia, in which 76 young road users, including 53 passengers, were injured. Three children were killed: a pedestrian and two passengers.
So, in the Irkutsk region, on 1,835 km of the Usolye-Sibirskoye —Angarsk regional highway, a 64-year-old crossover driver drove over to the side of the road intended for oncoming traffic during snowfall, first colliding with a minivan moving in the opposite direction, and then, already on the "oncoming lane", also with a truck. Four passengers of the crossover were killed in the accident, including a five-year-old girl who was being transported in the back seat with a seat belt but without a child restraint. The culprit of the collision was hospitalized with injuries.
In the Udmurt Republic, in the evening, on 8 km of the Mozhga—Vavozh regional highway, a 37-year-old female passenger car driver lost control in a snowfall and drove into the oncoming lane, where she collided with a truck. As a result of the accident, the 11-year-old daughter of a motorist who was in the front passenger seat without using a seat belt died. The female driver herself and her three other children, a 10-year—old daughter, as well as eight-year-old and nine-year-old sons, who were also being transported in the back seat with their seat belts unbuckled, were injured in the car accident and ended up in the hospital.
The State Traffic Inspectorate reminded motorists that child passengers are one of the most vulnerable categories among underage road users. When driving with children, it is important to use the safest possible driving style: do not be distracted at the wheel, choose a speed limit taking into account weather conditions, observe a safe side interval and distance between vehicles, abandon risky driving, overtaking and entering the lane of oncoming traffic, even in permitted places.
In addition, in the city of Biysk, Altai Territory, a 35-year-old car driver ran over a four-year-old girl, who, although accompanied by her father, suddenly ran onto the roadway outside the pedestrian crossing. The motorist did not have time to react and stop the vehicle, as a result, the girl died. At the same time, the nearest unregulated pedestrian crossing is located at a distance of 50 meters from the accident site.
"We remind parents of underage pedestrians of the need to be more attentive to their children, trying to ensure maximum safety for them. Even a short absence or the slightest negligence of parental control over children of preschool and primary school age on the street often leads to injuries or deaths of young road users, since the behavior of young pedestrians is often unpredictable due to their age," said the head of the Department for road Safety Promotion and prevention of child traffic injuries of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia Police Colonel Sergey Hrantskevich.
Earlier in the day, it was reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law to increase fines for transporting children in a car without a car seat or other restraints.
