The Northern Lights may be visible in the sky in the northwestern part of Russia on New Year's Eve. This was announced on December 29 by the press service of the Laboratory of Space Astronomy of the IKI RAS.

"Contrary to all forecasts, the Sun has managed to create intrigue for the New Year holidays. If yesterday the probability of celebrating New Year's Eve under the northern lights was minimal, now, unexpectedly, there are chances for this," the Telegram channel of the laboratory wrote.

It is noted that the highest probability of auroras in the New Year's sky is in the northwestern regions of the country: in the Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Leningrad regions, the Republic of Karelia and St. Petersburg.

"The probabilities for the central part of the country are still small. But on the other hand, on New Year's Eve, everyone should perform miracles. Maybe the Sun will turn on," the lab joked.

Earlier, on December 21, Alexander Pasenko, a senior researcher at the O. Y. Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences, said that in a few hundred years the inhabitants of Siberia will see the northern lights more often due to the displacement of the Earth's north magnetic pole towards the Taimyr Peninsula from the Canadian Archipelago. It is noted that the aurora borealis in Siberia has continued to increase in frequency recently, and at the end of September 2025, residents of the Novosibirsk region, Kuzbass and neighboring regions noticed the Aurora borealis.
