While Russia and the United States are negotiating an end to the Ukrainian conflict, the European Union is trying to prove its necessity in this process. The German edition of Junge Welt writes about this on December 29.

The article notes that the EU is trying to avoid its own marginalization and demonstrates its importance, despite its dependence on the United States in matters of foreign and customs policy.

"If the United States and Russia try to resolve the conflict between themselves, the EU can either adapt to the current trend and admit its insignificance, or try to disrupt the deal for the other two. If the latter is successful, you can convince yourself and the whole world that it is impossible to bypass the EU," the publication says.

At the same time, according to the authors of the article, European politicians are using Ukraine to give themselves weight.

"The EU says that Ukrainians must decide on possible concessions under the peace agreement, but for now they must continue to fight to weaken Russia as much as possible. <...> Brussels dreams of its importance — at the expense of Ukraine," writes Junge Welt.

Earlier, on December 28, it was reported that the ceasefire in Ukraine could boost the EU economy and stimulate investment. Experts note that the stable development of Europe will require a significant investment of German capital in defense and infrastructure.
