The largest solar flare since December 8 occurred. This was announced on December 27 by the press service of the Laboratory of Space Astronomy of the IKI RAS.

"At the eastern edge of the Sun, a large flare of the M5 level was registered early this morning, Moscow time.1. The power of the event was about 50% of the threshold of the highest score X," wrote the Telegram channel of the laboratory.

It is noted that the maximum radiation was recorded at 4:50 Moscow time. This outbreak was the strongest since December 8. The laboratory emphasized that the peak of flare activity will occur during the New Year holidays.

"At the same time, the probability of the formation of magnetic storms and bright auroras directly on New Year's Eve is currently considered low due to the significant distance of active regions from the Sun-Earth line," the publication emphasized.

Earlier, on December 24, the laboratory reported that the number of days with magnetic storms in 2025 was the highest in the last 10 years. According to the IKI RAS, for 358 days since the beginning of the year, geomagnetic disturbances have been registered in 69 cases, which is significantly higher than in 2024 (44 days) and comparable to the record values of 2015-2016.
