Goznak will create new security features for Russian banknotes
Goznak is working on the creation of new protective elements for Russian banknotes, although the existing set is successfully coping with its task. This was announced on December 26 by Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Sergey Belov.
"Despite the fact that there are fewer and fewer fakes according to statistics, we still have to be one step ahead of counterfeiters. We have significantly strengthened the security system in the new banknotes," he said.
Belov noted that the modernization of banknotes is carried out regularly, not only to update the design, but above all to increase the level of protection. The new banknotes have more complicated visual and tactile elements that can be checked when tilted or illuminated, as well as enhanced machine-readable features for ATMs and terminals.
The deputy chairman of the regulator stressed that new security features require new design solutions. It will take from a year to a year and a half for the updated banknotes to enter circulation — this time will be required for banks and enterprises to set up their equipment.
On the same day, Belov announced that the banknotes of 1000 rubles of the 1997 model will remain in circulation until they are naturally replaced with new banknotes. In addition, he said that new banknotes with a face value of 1,000 rubles will be put into circulation gradually. This process, according to the deputy chairman of the Central Bank, can take up to one and a half years.
