Meningitis, pneumonia and other diseases can be dangerous complications of the Hong Kong flu. This is reported by a general practitioner of the Polyclinic network of medical centers.Alexander Pankovetsky told <url> on Thursday, December 25.

According to the specialist, pneumonia is one of the most common and dangerous complications. It can be viral, caused directly by the influenza virus, or bacterial, which develops against a background of weakened immunity.

"Complications from ENT organs are also relatively common, such as sinusitis - inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, for example, sinusitis, and otitis media — inflammation of the middle ear," he said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .

Pankovetsky noted that less often, but with more severe consequences, the flu can affect the nervous system — in such cases, meningitis, meningoencephalitis, encephalitis, and other diseases are possible.

"The cardiovascular system can also be affected, with the risk of developing myocarditis, pericarditis, and in severe cases, acute heart failure. In addition, the flu can provoke kidney problems, causing an exacerbation of chronic diseases such as pyelonephritis or cystitis," the doctor warned.

On December 22, Vladislav Zhemchugov, MD, a specialist in especially dangerous infections, told the National Health Service that patients who have had the flu may experience vision problems, but this is easily treated with anti-inflammatory drugs, and there is no reason to panic.

Earlier, on December 15, Murad Shakhmardanov, MD, Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Epidemiology at the Institute of Clinical Medicine at Pirogov University, told the Moscow City News agency that influenza viruses are constantly changing, and new variants, including those from Hong Kong, appear every year.

Svetlana Vakhrusheva, PhD, Director of the Department of Clinical Medicine at the FEFU School of Medicine and Life Sciences, noted on December 20 that despite the rapid increase in the incidence of Hong Kong flu, the virus is not capable of repeating the fate of COVID-19, at the moment there is no reason to repeat the pandemic scenario.

The press service of Rospotrebnadzor reported on December 16 that the incidence of influenza in Russia is estimated to be moderate.
