The doctor pointed out an increased risk of migraines in women
Women are more than twice as likely to suffer from migraines than men. Yuri Nesterovsky, Associate professor of the Department of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Medical Genetics named after Academician L. O. Badalyan of Pirogov University, told about this on Thursday, December 25.
"According to global and domestic population studies, the prevalence of migraines without aura among adults ranges from 14% to 21% during the year. It is more common in women: the prevalence in women is on average 17%, in men — 8%," he said in an interview with Lenta.Ru .
The specialist added that another form of the disease — "migraine with aura" — is much less common, its prevalence is about 2.5%. It is characterized by such short-term symptoms as visual impairment: flickering dots or lines appear in the fields of vision, they can be either bright, luminous, or simply in the form of dark spots. In addition, there may be unilateral numbness or tingling sensation in the face, arm, leg, and difficulty pronouncing words, as if "the tongue is not listening."
These symptoms usually precede the appearance of a headache or occur at the beginning of a headache attack and can last on average from 20 minutes to 1 hour. Nesterovsky recommended that when headaches occur, do not abuse painkillers and do not delay going to the doctor, as the further course of the disease depends on this.
On December 24, the Ingosstrakh press service reported that approximately 40% of Russians' visits to a neurologist are related to headaches. It turned out that women (18%) are more likely to experience headaches and migraines than men (10%). In Khabarovsk, Tolyatti and Vladivostok, the vast majority of respondents indicated that they do not experience migraines — 81% each. In Orenburg, 24% of respondents reported regular or periodic headaches and migraine attacks, while in Penza and Yaroslavl, 18% each.
In turn, Alexandra Ashikhmina, a specialist at the pain treatment clinic, a neurologist at the FNCC of the FMBA of Russia, said that the most common provocateurs of migraines are products containing tyramine, RT reports. In particular, this substance is found in aged and fermented cheeses, processed meat products, including sausages and pates, as well as fermented soy products.
In August, Vladimir Popov, MD, Professor of the Department of Therapy with a course in Pharmacology and Pharmacy at Rosbiotech University, told NSN that in order to relieve migraine pain, it is important to adhere to proper nutrition, consume more fluids, and include vegetables and foods rich in magnesium and fatty acids in your diet. Omega-3.
