Fireworks, firecrackers and sparklers are an integral part of New Year's celebrations, creating an atmosphere of joy. However, the external effect hides risks: if used improperly, pyrotechnics can lead to injury, property damage and fires. Elena Kosheleva, Director of Sberbank Insurance projects, told Izvestia on December 30 how to minimize the danger and celebrate the holiday without unpleasant consequences.

"The first thing you should pay attention to is the choice of high—quality products. Buy pyrotechnics only in specialized stores and check for instructions and certifications. It is important to pay special attention to the packaging: any signs of damage, opening or getting wet are a reason to cancel the purchase. Remember that when using damaged or non—certified products, the risk increases significantly," she warned.

Violation of the rules for the use of pyrotechnics can result in a large fine or court

Even certified pyrotechnics require strict compliance with safety regulations. All the features of installing and using a particular salute are listed in the instructions — it is important to study it carefully in advance. There are also general rules: fireworks and fireworks can only be launched outdoors, in an open space. There should be no obstacles above the launch site, such as trees, power lines, or other objects. The launch should be carried out away from buildings, cars and combustible materials, ensuring a safe distance for the audience — usually at least 30 m.

It is important to remember that administrative liability is provided for violation of fire safety requirements: according to Chapter 20 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation, a fine from 5,000 to 15,000 rubles can be imposed on citizens. However, the possible consequences in the form of injury or fire are much more serious.

It is strictly forbidden to bend over the product when lighting the wick, direct the fireworks towards people or buildings, or immediately approach it if it does not work. Children cannot be trusted to launch fireworks — this is a task exclusively for adults.

"Sparklers and firecrackers are suitable for the house. But you also need to be careful with them. The sparkler candle must be held by the leg, the part free of pyrotechnic composition, at arm's length and at an angle of about 45 degrees. Make sure that sparks do not get on clothes, curtains, Christmas decorations and other flammable objects," Kosheleva said.

Do not forget about the safety of children. Explain to them that both sparklers and firecrackers can cause burns or injury if handled carelessly. The best option is to use them under adult supervision.
