- The orthodontist stated about the effect of malocclusion on the visual aging of the face
Malocclusion is a key factor affecting not only dental health, but also visual aging of the face, including loss of oval clarity, drooping corners of the mouth and deepening of the nasolabial folds. This was stated by Andrey Zhuk, dentist, orthodontist, Candidate of Medical Sciences, founder of the OrthoLike clinic, in an interview with Izvestia on December 22.
According to him, most of the age-related facial changes are associated with the displacement of the lower jaw, which occurs due to malocclusion and subsequent tooth erasure.
The expert explained that the teeth are the only support for the lower jaw. If they are not properly closed, they are erased, which leads to a decrease in the height of the bite — the vertical distance between the jaws.
"As a result, the lower jaw deepens and sinks, the height of the lower third of the face decreases, which visually adds age. Cosmetic procedures such as injections or thread lifting are temporary in nature, without eliminating the root cause, therefore, for a long—term effect, it is necessary to restore the correct anatomy of the dentition and the height of the bite," the expert clarified.
A special role in maintaining the bite is played by the lateral teeth — molars, which are often destroyed due to caries. Their loss or damage complicates the determination of the individually required bite height. Condylography, a method of examining the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), is used for accurate diagnosis. This procedure, which takes 30-40 minutes, allows you to evaluate the functionality of the joint and calculate the optimal shape and size of the lost or damaged molars, as the joint retains the "memory" of their original anatomy.
Based on the data of dental surgery, dentists can accurately recreate the anatomy of lateral teeth using crowns, inlays or orthodontic technologies, thereby restoring the required bite height.
"This not only prevents further tooth abrasion and TMJ problems such as aches and clicks, but also provides long-term support for the soft tissues of the face, keeping it young and toned. Correction of the bite, taking into account its height, becomes a comprehensive solution that combines dental health and aesthetics," concluded the specialist.
Anastasia Kardakova, a periodontist, dentist and expert at REVIXAN, told Izvestia on November 18 about the health-threatening symptoms in her mouth. According to her, a thin plaque on the tongue in the morning is a variant of the norm: it appears due to dryness or leftover food. However, if the plaque is dense, cheesy, accompanied by a burning sensation and an unpleasant odor, this may indicate a fungal infection (oral candidiasis).
