Obscene swearing has a positive effect on a person's physical condition, and also has a beneficial effect on his psychological state. This was confirmed on December 20 by the peer-reviewed scientific journal American Psychologist (AP).

To prove their hypothesis about the positive effect of swearing on a person's sense of self, the authors of the scientific article conducted experiments involving a total of 182 volunteers aged 18 to 65 years. All of them were asked to do push-ups on a chair, simultaneously using both obscene and ordinary words. Several criteria were studied in the internal state of the participants in the study: humor, psychological flow, self-confidence, social attractiveness and distraction.

"The results showed that swearing contributes to the formation of psychological states conducive to maximizing efforts and overcoming internal limitations.<...> Swearing can be an inexpensive and widely available psychological tool to help people 'not hold back' at the moment of maximum effectiveness," the article says.

It clarifies that the effects identified from the use of obscene vocabulary by the participants of the experiment can positively affect athletic performance, as well as contribute to adaptation to situations requiring masculinity or assertiveness.

In an interview with Izvestia on December 3, Irina Fadina, a practical psychologist, EmotionSync coach and member of the European Coaching Association, pointed out the need for a person to form a so-called psychological shield. This skill, as she explained, is not innate — it can be formed based on personal experience. Awareness of personal strengths and weaknesses, as well as a positive rethinking of situations, can help in this.
