To keep the brain young and reduce the risk of developing dementia, it is necessary to constantly keep it in creative tension. About this on December 19 in an interview with the portal DOC.ru said Professor of the Department of Human and Animal Physiology at Moscow State University, neurophysiologist Alexander Kaplan.

"The main recommendation is that a person with his brain should always be in creative tension. This does not mean that you have to make discoveries every day. But even if you make a stool, you add novelty to it: carvings, fancy legs or something else," he explained.

Kaplan noted that to create new neural connections, it is useful to study foreign languages for a long time, as well as develop fine motor skills, for example, writing with a pen on paper instead of using a keyboard.

The neurophysiologist also commented on the impact of artificial intelligence on the brain, pointing out that AI itself does not pose a threat, but it can be dangerous due to possible errors in programming or task priorities. The expert stressed that gadgets and the lack of live communication reduce the ability to empathy and imagination among the younger generation.

Alexander Kaplan will be one of the experts in the NMG DOC documentary "The Stranger Inside" about the mysteries of the human brain. You can watch the tape on the REN TV channel on December 21 at 23:55.

In December, a study by the University of Sheffield and the University of Western Sydney showed that improvising to music can help improve cognitive skills in older adults. The study involved beginners who had been undergoing various types of musical training for a year. In the process of improvisation, people are asked to create a new melody, and during playback, they are asked to repeatedly play a given melody. The results showed that both methods can improve brain function, but the improvisation method is more beneficial.

Science Daily magazine, in turn, talked about the impact of daily listening to music on reducing the risk of dementia. According to the study, people who regularly listened to music had a 39% reduced risk of developing dementia, and playing musical instruments reduced the risk of the disease by 35%.
