The administration of US President Donald Trump has made it clear to European countries that it aims to use frozen Russian assets to resolve the conflict in Ukraine. This was reported on December 17 by the Washington Post (WP).

"The Europeans have received clear signals that the US administration wants to use these assets for an agreement [on Ukraine]," the article says.

According to the newspaper, the United States is actively putting pressure on European countries and their leaders to agree to use the frozen assets of the Russian Federation to provide loans to the Ukrainian side.

At the same time, Washington considers this step as an important part of a peaceful settlement, but it is also clarified that the initiative may cause tension between the United States and Europe.

Earlier in the day, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said that the idea of allocating aid to Ukraine from the Finnish budget was impossible unless the EU summit decided to expropriate Russian assets. At the same time, the leaders of Estonia and Finland agreed that using assets is the only solution to meet Kiev's urgent financial needs.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on November 27 that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the European Union would have negative consequences. He also instructed the Russian government to develop a package of retaliatory measures.
