- The Chinese Foreign Ministry opposed the use of frozen assets of the Russian Federation
The Chinese authorities are against the unilateral decision of the European Union (EU) to use frozen assets of Russia. The corresponding statement was made on December 17 by the official representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Guo Jiakun, at a briefing on December 17.
"China has consistently opposed unilateral sanctions that violate international law and are not approved by the UN Security Council," Guo was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.
He also added that the parties should work together to create favorable conditions for advancing peace negotiations and a political solution to the Ukrainian crisis.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said on December 16 that the chances of the European Union (EU) making a decision on the use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine are 50%. According to him, concerns about the decision to use Russian assets exist throughout Europe.
The Euractiv portal reported on December 15 that seven EU states do not support the idea of confiscating Russian assets under sanctions. Russian President Vladimir Putin said on November 27 that the confiscation of Russian assets located in the European Union would have negative consequences. He instructed the Russian government to develop a package of retaliatory measures.
