Every year on December 19, the Orthodox Church remembers St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, one of the most beloved saints not only in Russia, but throughout the world. He is considered a defender of the underprivileged, a patron saint of travelers and sailors. They pray to St. Nicholas for healing from diseases, resolving financial problems, restoring justice and guiding him on the righteous path. Izvestia has prepared postcards and congratulations on an important church holiday, which can be shared on MAX, Telegram, WhatsApp (owned by Meta, a company recognized as extremist in Russia) and other social networks.

Beautiful pictures and postcards on St. Nicholas Day on December 19th

Nicholas the Wonderworker was born in the 3rd century in the Greek colony of Lycia in Asia Minor. From the very first days of life, the baby showed signs of future great glory. The first miracle happened when he was born — he cured his mother of a serious illness. And during the baptism, the future saint stood in the font for three hours without anyone's support.

From an early age, Nicholas diligently studied the Holy Scriptures. He spent whole days in the temple, and devoted his nights to prayer and reading spiritual books. When the boy grew older, his uncle, Bishop Nicholas of Patara, made his nephew a reader in the church, and then elevated him to the rank of priest. After the death of his parents, Nicholas gave away all his possessions and devoted himself entirely to the service of God.

Soon Nicholas became famous as a defender of orphans, widows and the poor. One day, the saint found out that his neighbor, a rich merchant in the past, had completely gone bankrupt. The man had three daughters. Desperate to find decent husbands for them, the merchant was going to send the girls to a brothel. Then Nikolai began to secretly plant bags of gold in his neighbor's house. Thanks to this, the father was able to collect a dowry for his daughters and marry them off without discrediting the honor of the girls.

This episode from the life of the saint formed the basis of the tale of Santa Claus. According to legend, one of the bags that Nicholas threw out the window to a poor merchant got into a stocking hung out to dry. This is where the Catholic tradition of putting Christmas gifts in stockings came from, and the saint himself became the prototype of the Western "Santa Claus."

St. Nicholas is also revered as the patron saint of sailors and travelers. This is due to another episode in the saint's life — once, on his way to Alexandria, he resurrected a sailor who had fallen from the mast. Subsequently, Nikolai repeatedly came to the aid of drowning and storm-stricken people.

The fame of Nicholas and his virtues spread rapidly in Lycia. After the death of the former bishop, the Council could not elect a successor for a long time. Then one of the bishops received a divine revelation that the pulpit should be given to the first person to enter the church in the morning. This man turned out to be Nikolai.

The beginning of the saint's episcopal ministry fell during the difficult times of persecution for Christians. Nicholas was imprisoned for preaching the gospel. But despite all the hardships, he remained firm in his faith and strengthened the spirit of other Christians. When Emperor Constantine came to power, the saint returned to his flock and became famous as an ardent fighter against heresy and paganism. There is an unconfirmed legend, but it has become part of the church tradition, that during the First Ecumenical Council in Nicaea, Nicholas slapped the heretic Arius in the face, for which he was even defrocked. However, after the miraculous appearance of the Virgin, the bishop was pardoned.

Nicholas died around the year 345 in the Worlds. His veneration in Russia began in the XI century and quickly became widespread. The feast in honor of the saint, celebrated on December 19, the day of his repose, was popularly called "Nicholas the Winter". On this day, bratchins were held — large feasts in which all the villagers participated. Unmarried girls prayed to "Father Nicholas" for a meeting with their betrothed, men for a rich harvest and good livestock, and women for the health of family members. The children were given sweet gifts, which were hidden under the pillow.

On St. Nicholas Day, solemn divine services are held in churches, and processions are also organized in churches consecrated in honor of the saint. After the service, many believers arrange modest feasts with their family or spend time with their relatives.

Colorful postcards can be used to congratulate your loved ones on the winter holiday of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker. They often depict the saint himself, church domes and winter landscapes. You can add warm wishes to the picture. Below are examples of postcards and greetings that can be shared on social networks.
