The tourist flow from China to Russia will increase by at least 30% due to the decision to cancel visas for tourists from the People's Republic of China (PRC). This was announced on December 1 by Maya Lomidze, Executive Director of the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR).

"It is estimated by at least 30%, primarily in the border regions, in the regions of the Far East," TASS quoted her as saying.

In turn, Alexander Bragin, director of the Association of Travel Aggregators (ATAG), called the visa-free travel for Chinese tourists a long-awaited news for the tourism industry. He added that the tourist flow from China to Russia may double, taking into account business trips. According to statistics, Chinese citizens primarily want to visit major megacities — Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities with millions, Bragin said.

"Small authentic cities with a rich history, such as Suzdal and Kostroma, are also in demand. Chinese citizens are also interested in natural territories such as Karelia, the Murmansk Region, and Lake Baikal," the expert said.

On December 1, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on the temporary entry procedure for Chinese citizens to Russia. According to the document, by September 14, 2026, Chinese citizens will be able to enter Russia and stay on its territory without visas for up to 30 days, subject to the principle of reciprocity. Holders of ordinary Chinese passports are allowed to visit Russia for guest and business visits, for tourist and other purposes.

The introduction of the PRC visa-free regime for citizens of the Russian Federation with a regular passport for up to 30 days became known on September 2. The next day, the Russian leader indicated that Russia would reciprocate China's move.
