Almost 20 tons of tangerines from China, infected with a dangerous pest, were not allowed to enter St. Petersburg. The entire batch was destroyed, the press service of the North-Western Interregional Rosselkhoznadzor Administration reports.

The fruit cargo arrived at the temporary storage warehouse, writes 78.ru . During the phytosanitary control, the department's staff discovered a live puparium.

The examination showed that the tangerines are infected with the thorny mountain whitefly. This quarantine facility was identified for the first time when imported quarantined products were imported into Russia.

The insect damages citrus crops, grapes and apple seedlings, which poses a threat to agriculture. The pest sucks the juices from the leaves, which leads to their weakening, yellowing and twisting.
