In the Okhta River, which flows on the border of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region, an almost 13-fold excess of nitrite nitrogen levels was recorded. This is stated in the report of the Federal Service for Hydrometeorology. Experts note that this is one of the most dangerous cases of exceeding the standards of a highly toxic substance in the region.

The report says that nitrites could have entered the river with sewage or agricultural waste. 78.ru .
In addition, organic pollution of the mouth of the Kamenka River, which is a tributary of the Okhta, has been recorded. At the city's border, the concentration of organic substances exceeds the standards by almost 2 times. Moreover, experts are sure that this is fresh pollution from a nearby source.

Problems with the phosphate content were also found. Their concentration does not exceed the maximum permissible levels, but the maximum value was recorded in Okhta. This carries risks of water blooming and deterioration of conditions for aquatic organisms.

Earlier, on November 19, it was reported that scientists had identified strains of cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa in Moscow reservoirs synthesizing toxic compounds dangerous to the liver. The massive proliferation of these microorganisms — the so—called water bloom - leads to the accumulation of toxins in reservoirs, which can pose a threat to animal and human health.
