Brilliant bloodsuckers: what to play for an ordinary vampire
Just a couple of decades ago, vampires were everywhere: in movies, TV series and, of course, in video games. However, in recent years, these charming bloodsucking creatures have lost some of their appeal, and vampire games have become infrequent. The more long-awaited was the release of Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2. The game, however, received mixed reviews, and some players did not like it at all critically. Fortunately, vampires have a long and rich gaming history. This collection contains admittedly excellent games about bloodsuckers, one hundred percent reflecting their dark charm.
Castlevania
Genre: metroidvania, platformer
When it was released: the first game in 1986
What to play on: NES, SNES, Game Boy, PlayStation, Nintendo DS, PS4, Xbox One, PC
The Castlevania series is without exaggeration the "gold standard" among vampire games. Since her debut back in 1986 on the Famicom/NES, she has set the direction for dozens of imitators and, together with Nintendo's Metroid, has formed her own subgenre, Metroidvania. The central theme of almost all parts is the confrontation between the Belmont clan and Count Dracula, who is reborn every hundred years to envelop the world in darkness. The player will have to fight his way through the sinister halls of Dracula's castle, full of undead, demons, ghosts, witches, Frankenstein's monsters and, of course, vampires.
Vampire Night
Genre: Shooter
When it was released: 2000
What to play on: arcade machines, PlayStation 2
Vampire Night first appeared in arcade game halls, and then was ported to PlayStation 2. The arcade version is considered canonical, but the console port has become much more accessible and is still a worthy representative of the genre. The plot follows two vampire hunters who travel to a Gothic castle to destroy powerful vampires and hordes of various monsters.
The Incredible Adventures Of Van Helsing
Genre: action role-playing
When it was released: 2013
What to play on: PC
With his novel "Dracula," Bram Stoker secured a solid place for bloodsuckers in pop culture. Any work that draws inspiration from this classic source should be treated with respect, and The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing copes with this task with dignity. Here the player gets the opportunity to control the son of the great vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing. Destroying monsters in the city of Borgovia is a very exciting activity, even though some players believe that the game has not brought anything truly new or revolutionary. Nevertheless, fans of stylish action games will find a lot of interesting things in it and its two sequels.
BloodRayne
Genre: Action
When it was released: 2002
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, GameCube, Nintendo Switch
The main character of this cult action game, half-vampire, half-human Rain, must stop the Nazi occultists who are trying to use supernatural artifacts to win the Second World War. The plot sounds crazy, but that's exactly what BloodRayne is all about: a wild mix of pulp, supernatural, and alternate history. The game offers dynamic, acrobatic battles in which Rain uses his vampire powers to bloodily tear enemies to shreds. The original game and the sequel have been re-released on modern platforms.
V Rising
Genre: Survival
When it was released: 2024
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 5
As a rule, in many vampire games, the player acts as an undead surrounded by enemies. The main task is to survive and defeat everyone. Such plots are appropriate, but leave little room for exploring other aspects of vampire existence. What should an immortal do with infinity at his disposal? V Rising is an ambitious project that tries to answer this question in its own way. Here the player is given the freedom to travel through the countryside, develop his castle, join alliances or fight with the living and the dead. The crafting system, base construction, combat mechanics and many other activities create a truly intense experience in V Rising, which allows you to immerse yourself in the life of a vampire.
A Vampyre Story
Genre: Quest
When it was released: 2008
What to play on: PC
A classic point-and-click quest. The plot centers on Mona, a girl who was turned into a vampire against her will and imprisoned in a gloomy castle. When her "husband" by the will of fate "finds" his aspen stake, Mona decides to escape and return to Paris. This humorous game stands out for its charming visual style. The continuation of the story never came out: the planned A Vampyre Story: Year One did not reach the shelves. But recently there have been rumors that the project may "rise from the dead."…
Code Vein
Genre: soulzlike
When it was released: 2019
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One
In the world of Code Vein, vampires are called Revenants, and the entire game mythology is built around this concept. The player creates their own Revenant character from scratch and embarks on a battle with monsters that have awakened after a catastrophic event called the Great Collapse. You will have to unravel an intriguing mystery and meet many interesting characters. Although the level design in Code Vein can be frustrating at times, the basic gameplay and expressive visual presentation more than compensate for the shortcomings.
Darkest Dungeon – The Crimson Court
Genre: roglike
When it was released: 2017
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
The dark setting of the game has become the perfect setting for DLC with a vampire theme. The heroes infected with the Crimson Curse begin to suffer from an unquenchable thirst for blood. The player can try to cure them of this condition, but sometimes it's easier and more profitable to let them succumb to their unnatural thirst. Characters who are completely consumed by the curse and are able to feed on blood become much stronger.
Vampyr
Genre: action role-playing
When it was released: 2018
What to play on: PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch
Vampyr can be called the vampire version of Mass Effect: it has a variety of dialogue options, important plot choices, and rich RPG mechanics. London, 1918, gives the game an atmospheric Gothic look that visually sets the project apart from others. The main character is Jonathan Reed, a vampire and part—time surgeon who lives in London after the First World War, during the Spanish flu epidemic.
