- The Russian Foreign Ministry declared the illegality of the restoration of sanctions against Iran
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, during a meeting with the ambassadors of Great Britain and France and the Charge d'affaires of Germany, said that the mechanism for restoring sanctions against Iran is illegal. The document with information about the meeting was published on September 22 on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry.
"The situation was discussed in connection with the unlawful attempts of the European countries participating in the JCPOA to activate the mechanism for restoring previously canceled UN Security Council sanctions resolutions against Iran. The Russian side pointed out that the United Kingdom, Germany and France had no legal grounds and procedural possibilities for such actions," the message says.
It is also reported that the results of the consideration of the draft resolution in the UN Security Council (SC) are legally null and void and cannot serve as a reason for making decisions on the sanctions impact on Iran.
Earlier, on September 19, the UN Security Council rejected a draft resolution on maintaining the lifting of sanctions against Iran. We are talking about the resumption of restrictions lifted in 2015 after the conclusion of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
On September 20, at the Russian Foreign Ministry, Moscow repeatedly stressed the illegality of European countries' actions to restore sanctions against Iran within the framework of the UN Security Council. The Russian Foreign Ministry noted that the lifting of the sanctions resolutions confirmed the illegality of attempts to "snapback" (a quick return to the previous stage of something) and the rejection of a political line aimed at putting pressure on Iran.
