- Bloomberg learned about Iran's possible severance of ties with the IAEA due to sanctions
Iran's Supreme National Security Council has warned of a possible break in Tehran's relations with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) if European countries resume UN sanctions against the country. This was reported by Bloomberg on September 14.
It is noted that Tehran has agreed to submit reports on its nuclear facilities to the IAEA, which may open access to inspectors to Iranian nuclear facilities in the future.
But at the same time, the statement said that "these agreements will be suspended" if "any hostile actions" are taken against Iran and its nuclear facilities, "including the restoration of Security Council resolutions on sanctions against Iran."
The Council warned that in response, Tehran could withdraw from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
On September 9, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that new terms of cooperation had been agreed with the IAEA after the suspension of cooperation and the termination of inspections at the Islamic Republic's nuclear facilities. It was clarified that the parties have begun negotiations aimed at creating a new mechanism to fulfill Iran's obligations under guarantees and ensure continued cooperation.
Later, on September 10, Araghchi noted that the new agreement between Iran and the IAEA does not imply the agency's access to Iranian nuclear facilities. He added that later Iran will provide reports on the basis of which it is expected to agree on the type of possible access of IAEA staff to nuclear facilities.
