Tourism in the United States is facing a drop in the flow of foreigners in 2025
The decline in the number of foreign tourists to the United States began in February of this year and is associated with political decisions made by the administration of the American leader Donald Trump. This was reported on September 2 by China's Central Television, CCTV.
"Industry insiders indicate that the trend of slow entry of foreign tourists traveling to the United States may continue for a period of time. Factors such as rising tourism costs, political uncertainty and ongoing geopolitical tensions will limit foreign tourists to the United States," the publication says.
The decline in the number of tourists to the United States has affected many countries, ranging from Canada to the regions of Europe, Asia and Africa. Data from the American National Tourism Administration shows a drop in the number of foreign visitors to the country by 3 million people in the first seven months of 2025, accounting for 1.6% of the total.
According to television reports, tourism in the United States is experiencing a decline amid stricter visa policies, rising tariffs on goods and political uncertainty. The effect of the tariffs and entry restrictions imposed by Trump on citizens of some countries was particularly noticeable, which caused a negative reaction from foreign citizens. A sharp decrease in tourist flows is observed among Europeans — the number of visitors from Denmark, Germany and France decreased by 19%, 10% and 6.6%, respectively.
The World Tourism and Travel Council said in its report that the United States will be the only country with a reduction in spending by foreign tourists in 2025, which, according to analysts, indicates a decline in Washington's global attractiveness as a tourist destination.
The British company Tourism Economics also confirms the negative trend: according to its forecasts, the flow of travelers to the United States will decrease by 8.2% in 2025, which is significantly less than before the pandemic. Experts attribute this phenomenon to rising prices for tourist services, instability in the political arena and ongoing geopolitical risks.
On August 30, Reuters reported that the U.S. Court of Appeals had declared most of the duties imposed by Trump illegal. The tariffs, as noted in the publication, were limited until October 14, 2025, so that the office of the head of the White House could appeal to the US Supreme Court. On the same day, Trump called this decision erroneous and noted that all his duties continue to apply.
On August 26, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that the United States had begun to receive record budget revenues from duties imposed by Trump. According to him, the revenue from tariffs could amount to $300 billion per year.
