Iran's Supreme leader Ali Khamenei said on August 24 that he would strongly oppose US attempts to force Tehran to "obey."

"Iran will not obey [US President Donald] Trump. The Iranian people will resolutely resist him and those who place false hopes on him," the Clash Report quoted Khamenei as saying on the Telegram channel.

He stressed that those who ask why Iran is not conducting direct negotiations with the United States are "thinking superficially."

On August 13, Sergei Balmasov, an expert at the Middle East Institute and an expert at the Russian International Affairs Council, said that the statements of the Eurotroika countries about their readiness to launch a mechanism to restore sanctions against Iran if it does not resume negotiations with the United States on its nuclear program by the end of August look not only absurd, but also contradictory.

The Financial Times (FT) newspaper reported that day that France, Britain and Germany had expressed their readiness to re-impose sanctions against Iran if the Islamic Republic did not resume negotiations with the international community on its nuclear doctrine. The Iranian side did not respond in any way to the message about a possible extension of restrictions.
