The average old-age pension as of July 1, 2025 was 25,098 rubles, RIA Novosti reported on August 19, citing data from the Social Fund. The pension of non-working pensioners exceeds the amount of payments to employees by more than 3.5 thousand rubles. According to the Social Fund, by July 1, non—working pensioners received an average of 25.8 thousand rubles, while working pensioners received 22.1 thousand rubles. At the same time, with the onset of autumn, some pensioners, including those who have completed their work, can expect to improve their financial situation. About how it is beneficial for working pensioners to terminate their employment contract and to whom pensions will be increased starting in September — in the Izvestia article.

How is it beneficial for a working pensioner to quit and receive a pension recalculation

The pension system in Russia takes into account the difference between the status of a working and non-working pensioner when calculating payments. If a person continues to work after retirement, the indexation of accruals is temporarily frozen. However, upon dismissal, the pension is automatically recalculated, taking into account the missed indexations during work.

For maximum benefit, a pensioner should leave in the last days of the month. In this case, the recalculation of the increased pension starts on the first day of the following month. For example, if a pensioner leaves on August 29, he will start receiving an increased pension on September 1. If the dismissal occurs on September 1, the recalculation will begin only in October, and the person will lose one month of the increased payment.

It is also important that the pensioner does not work a single day during the month of dismissal. If a pensioner quits and immediately starts working again, this will be considered a continuous working period, and the Social Fund of Russia (SFR) will not begin recalculating. After recalculation, the retired pensioner can return to work, while the increased pension will remain, but subsequent annual indexations will cease again.

Pension indexation in August 2025

In August 2025, the SFR resumed the indexation of payments for working pensioners for the first time since 2016. Recalculation takes place automatically without submitting applications.

At the same time, as Sberbank's help desk explains, indexation for working pensioners will be carried out according to special rules.

For example, a pensioner received 19.5 thousand rubles in 2024. If he had not worked, his pension, due to all the indexations he missed, would have amounted to 36.3 thousand rubles. The pension in 2025 was indexed by 9.5%. As a result, the payments will be recalculated as follows:

— They will calculate an increase for the percentage of indexation from the amount that the pensioner could receive, taking into account all the indexations he missed if he did not work: 36.3 × 9.5% = 3.5 thousand rubles.

— The received increase will be added to the current pension amount: 19.5 thousand + 3.5 thousand = 23 thousand rubles. This amount will be received by a working pensioner after the indexation carried out in 2025.

In addition, on August 1, the SFR recalculates the value of pension points for the previous year. So, starting from August 1, 2025, the pension was recalculated taking into account the points earned in 2024. The maximum amount of the increase is 3 pension points. One point in 2025 costs 145.69 rubles, meaning the maximum pension increase can reach 437 rubles. However, for those who retired in previous years, the cost of points is taken into account by the year of retirement or by the year of resumption of work. For example, a pensioner retiring in 2021 will receive an increase in the cost of 2021 points (about 99 rubles per point), which reduces the maximum increase to about 297 rubles.

The pensioner will receive a recalculation for all missed indexations after he leaves the job.

Increased payments from September 1, 2025 for three categories of pensioners

Starting from September 1, 2025, Russia will increase payments for three categories of pensioners:

— Pensioners who stopped working in August 2025. For them, starting in September, the pension will be recalculated, taking into account indexations and the status of a non-working pensioner, which will lead to an increase in payments.

— Pensioners who turned 80 in August. They will receive a doubled fixed pension payment — from 8,907.7 rubles to 17,815.4 rubles per month. If the pensioner has officially registered his departure, a monthly supplement of 1,314 rubles will be added to the payment. In case of receiving a state pension, the amount of the supplement will be 1,377 rubles. This was announced by Alexey Govyrin, a member of the State Duma Committee on Small and medium-sized enterprises, in an interview with TASS.

— Pensioners with group I disabilities. Their pensions will be increased taking into account the new additional payments.

In addition, it is possible to receive additional payments for dependents (children, grandchildren, disabled relatives), but these payments require a separate application to the SFR.

Tips for working pensioners before quitting

— Quit in the last days of the month to start receiving an increased pension faster;

— Be sure to take a break from work for at least a full calendar month to recalculate;

— After recalculation of the pension, you can resume work without losing the increased amount of payments. However, subsequent planned indexations will not be carried out again until the citizen resigns again.
