A new tourist route, the Great Russian Northern Way, will run through the Vologda Region: travelers will start in Moscow and end on the legendary Solovetsky Islands. Its details were discussed on August 8 at a meeting in the government of the Vologda region.

The administration said that the key points of the trip will be the famous historical and cultural cities of the region — Vologda, Kirillov and Belozersk. The route will cover 10 points in total. Travelers will be able to see with their own eyes unique sites of world significance: Orthodox churches and examples of traditional wooden architecture typical of the Russian North.

"We are currently identifying the key display objects. The project is able to give an impetus to pilgrimage tourism in the region. We have many shrines, places of power of the Russian world, which we are obliged to preserve, protect and glorify," Governor Georgy Filimonov is quoted as saying on the government's website.

Russian Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) Vologda Diocese and the non-profit organization "Heritage of the Russian North" are working on the creation of the route.

"There is a big demand for interregional tourism, and we are already cooperating in this area with Moscow and St. Petersburg," he added.

On June 16, Izvestia reported that hiking trails would be legalized in the Murmansk Region. Similar measures will affect the whole country. The relevant bill introducing the concept of "tourist trail" is planned to be adopted in the State Duma.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
