A window into the future: "Scarlet Sails"-2025 will be dedicated to victories
A huge window, complex kinetic objects and real water on the stage. All this will be seen by the audience of the grand concert on the Palace Square, which will begin the graduation celebration "Scarlet Sails — 2025". Recently, the production of the first part of the decorations was completed: on a 12-meter truck, the finished structures went to St. Petersburg and are about to take their place opposite the Main Headquarters, in the very heart of the city on the Neva. On the eve of their dispatch, Izvestia visited the Moscow factory where work was underway to learn more about the concept and visual solution of the show.
The Petersburg window
Work is in full swing in a large industrial building on the outskirts of Moscow. Artists, 3D modeling specialists, and engineers are putting the finishing touches to the project, while production is in full swing in the workshop on the ground floor. Workers in respirators paint metal parts, craftsmen with sewing machines conjure fabrics, and a huge machine controlled by a computer creates a multi-meter banner. An interesting detail: this banner is 50x5 m in size, it is printed within ten hours, and the total area of such elements will be 3.5 thousand square meters.m.
But even if you don't know the numbers, one look at what is happening makes it clear that the spectacle will be really large-scale.
The details are still being kept secret, but Nikolai Orlov, the production designer of the concert part of the festival, has opened the veil of secrecy about the general concept of the show and the arrangement of the stage on Dvortsovaya.:
— We have come to a concise and at the same time powerful image of an open window. It symbolizes great opportunities for all graduates. We look through it into the future, we look into the past. To enhance this image, it was decided to make the decoration very voluminous. And through the opening on the right side of the stage, the architecture of the General Staff will be visible," Nikolai Orlov shared with Izvestia.
So far, you can only get an idea of the appearance of the future scene from a 3D model, but even when you look at it, you realize how interesting the shape turned out to be for the artists, with what precise and complex geometry it is. There are no 90-degree angles here, Nikolai Orlov emphasizes. At the same time, according to him, the structure will not look heavy: a complex cantilevered roof should give lightness to this image.
Images familiar from childhood
No less impressive, however, as always on this holiday, will be the props.
— We have a camera with three-dimensional props. He is kinetic, appears from the space behind the stage and interacts with the artists," the artist continues. Such objects are first created and fully processed digitally, then embodied in a small model and, finally, acquire a full-fledged physical embodiment, which is tested in special rooms on a scale of 1:1.
The largest moving object is 10x10 m in size! We'll find out exactly what it will be closer to the show. But we are talking about images that have been familiar to us since childhood. According to the creators, their appearance should evoke warm emotions among those who came to the concert — and remind them of the connection between the past and the future, to show the importance of preserving traditions and respect for historical heritage.
— In the concert part of "Scarlet Sails" we will tell and show what helps the good to always prevail. Let's talk about the power of unity, courage, love, faith, and hope. Of course, let's remember the great victories of our ancestors. Let's talk about the will and the spirit, about what helps us all win in a global sense, since our whole life is connected with victories," said Lidiya Butuzova, general producer of the concert part of Scarlet Sails 2025.
The triumph of good over evil
In the year of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory, the triumph of good over evil will be the leitmotif of all musical numbers of the concert on Palace Square. The design of the stage space, graphics, visual and pyrotechnic effects, decorations together with the artists will tell about the feelings and human qualities that help to win. There will also be a separate issue addressing the tragic theme of the blockade: it will be a reminder of the strength of the human spirit and the resilience of the inhabitants of the Northern Capital.
And finally, according to established tradition, the theme of the brig "Scarlet Sails" will also be played in the decorations and props of the concert.
— Every year we bring something related to the ship to the image of the stage. The future show will be no exception. There will even be real water! — Nikolai Orlov was intrigued.
The concert with the participation of the most relevant stars (their names are still a mystery) starts on June 28 at 22:00. And at 00:40, the culminating part of the whole holiday will begin — a water and pyrotechnic show and the passage of the brig Rossiya through the Neva River. This block will pick up the theme of victories and reveal it in each mise-en-scene, which will be played out at the Peter and Paul Fortress, on the Palace Embankment, on the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island and at several other locations.
— Every person faces trials, small and big difficulties, successes and defeats. It is from them that the path to achieving goals, becoming a person and happiness consists. Life gives us moments of joy and victory that shape our destiny and define our character. Small steps lead to great achievements, allowing you to experience the fullness of being. This is exactly the idea we want to embody in our show," explained Mikhail Kolpakhchiev, chief production director of the Scarlet Sails water and pyrotechnic show.
The Scarlet Sails Alumni Festival appeared back in Soviet times, in 1968, but the beautiful tradition was interrupted after 1979. It was only in the 21st century, in 2005, that it was revived on the initiative of ROSSIYA Joint Stock Bank, the Government of St. Petersburg and Channel Five. Over the past 20 years, the holiday has reached real heights, won many international prizes, but most importantly, it has gained the love of the whole country and has become the most anticipated event uniting generations. And there is no doubt: no matter how glorious the past of the "Scarlet Sails" may be, there are new achievements and new horizons ahead.
